Racial Justice Events this week, and MORE...

From Bishop Kevin Strickland's letter to the synod on June 10, he states:  The work of combating racism, bigotry, white supremacy and hate of any kind is work but I believe it is the work we are called to through our baptism as we live among God’s faithful people, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.

Nativity LC, Bethlehem, GA - Briscoe Mill Park Food Ministry

Our church is committed to helping our neighbors through a food pantry that helps to provide culturally appropriate, adequate nutrition for these families in addition to fresh protein and produce help reduce the risk factors and help them achieve a greater sense of well-being, become more self-sufficient, and in turn help serve others as God’s children.

Synod COVID-19 Grants Still Available!!! 

The Bishop and Synod Council are continuing to issue COVID-19 Grants to address the immediate financial need of a small number of congregations in the Southeastern Synod.

LifeLine Fund

A generous grant from the Lilly Foundation, matched by funds from our synod, will provide up to $80K in financial support for rostered ministers plus training and support for congregations who need stewardship assistance. 

The LifeLine Fund will provide rostered ministers with financial education, time with a financial planner, plus up to three years of grants paid directly to the lender.

Temporary Expanded Licensing for Streaming Worship Services

Augsburg Fortress is extending through July 31, 2020, its temporary permission for worshiping communities to include Augsburg Fortress administered liturgical text and liturgical music copyrights in a livestream or podcast.

Congregational COVID-19 Task Force and Disaster Coordinator

In the Southeastern Synod COVID-19 Guidelines, each congregation is asked to designate a Disaster Coordinator that the Southeastern Synod Disaster Team will train in Disaster Ministry and the synod's COVID-19 Task Force will communicate with when we have new guidance or recommendations to be communicated.

Synod Convocation RE-SCHEDULED for Jan. 25-28, 2021

In order to keep folks safely distanced, we would not be able to meet for our annual Synod Leadership Convocation in September 2020.   Thus, we have re-scheduled this event for January 25, 2021.  The event will take place at Lutheridge, Arden, NC.

Michael Jannett and Bishop Kevin Strickland are gathering several ELCA leaders in the area of children's and youth ministry:  Rachel Alley (ELCA Youth Ministry), Janelle Hooper (ELCA Children's Ministry), and Dawn Rundman (Sparkhouse and Augsburg Fortress contributor).  Together, we will explore ways to equip our children and youth ministry leaders as they lead through uncertain times.  A virus, a quarantine lifestyle, and racism are tough seas to navigate.

SESLYO Assembly - June 20, 2020

In an ONLINE assembly, the Southeastern Synod Lutheran Youth Organization (SESLYO) leaders invite at least two participants (those just graduating from 6th through 12th grade) from EVERY congregation in our synod.  More are welcome to attend from the same congregation, but only two folks from each church will have voice AND vote for the elections of board members and in the ratifying of the SESLYO Constitution, By-Laws, and Continuing Resolutions.

    • Rev. Kim Stover retired on June 1, 2020.  His last call was serving All Saints, Lilburn.
    • Rev. Dr. James Thomas retired on June 1, 2020.  His last call was to Lenoir Rhyne University, as Associate Professor of Church and Ministry, and Director of African American Ministries on the LTSS Campus

 

  

Prayers & Concerns
  • For the family and friends of Rev. Karen Schwindler.  Rev. Schwindler passed away on June 7, 2020.  See Rev. Karen Schwindler's obituary here.
  • An Intercession to mark the commemoration of the Emanuel 9, (an ELCA Worship Resource):  "God, our truth, through the ages you have spoken through prophets. Stir up in your church a passion for your word revealed in Jesus, that following the witness of the Emanuel Nine, your church studies the scriptures, shows hospitality, prays without ceasing, and embodies prophetic justice in community. Embolden church leaders and all the baptized to remember the lives of the Nine, repent of racism and white supremacy, and renew our commitment to your word revealed most fully in Jesus, our way, truth, and life.  Amen."
