Here is our follow up to our Lectionary Study

with Rev. Dr. Brian Peterson, from March 18 & 25, 2022:

We want to thank all who could attend on Fridays, March 18 & 25, for our Easter Lectionary Study for Year C, with Rev. Dr. Brian Peterson.  We had a wonderful time together.    In fact, we are thankful for ALL of you, regardless if you were able to attend or not.  We are thankful for this partnership.

Dr. Peterson invites us to consider in these texts from John, two major questions:

  • How does Jesus meet us?
  • What does that mean?

Notes from Rev. Dr. Brian Peterson

In our rotations of teaching, small groups, and discussion, Dr. Peterson put forth intriguing questions that might help us wrestle with each week's Gospel lesson.

Here are those questions, broken down per week:

Easter Sunday (John 20:1-18) - April 17, 2022

  1. Where do you see the broken human condition reflected most clearly in this text?
  2. Where do you see God’s saving action to meet and heal that brokenness – where is the gospel in this Gospel text?
  3. Remaining questions / puzzles / insights?

2nd Sunday of Easter (John 20:19-31) - April 24, 2022

  1. (same questions from Easter Sunday

3rd Sunday of Easter (John 21:1-19) - May 1, 2022

  1. What do you do AFTER Easter?  (Get back to work : )

4th Sunday of Easter (John 10:22-30) – May 8, 2022

  1. What’s the range of ways in which people in our pews think about the identity of Jesus? And how can this text speak to that?
  2. Remaining questions / puzzles / insights?

5th Sunday of Easter (John 5:1-9) – May 15, 2022

  1. What prevents our congregations from embracing that new commandment to love one another as Jesus has loved us?
  2. Do we have an easier time loving those inside the community, or those outside?

6th Sunday of Easter (John 5:1-9) – May 22, 2022

  1. What do you think it means that God comes to “make a home” with us? Are there dangers in such a claim?
  2. What else catches your attention in this passage?

7th Sunday of Easter (John 17:20-26) – May 29, 2022

  1. What would change if the church understood its identity primarily as “we are a community for whom Jesus prays” (a question raised by Gail O’Day)?
  2. What else in John 17:20-26 catches your attention?
