We are excited to invite Pastor Mary Canniff-Kunn, interim pastor at Friendship Lutheran Church as our presenter at this year’s Conference Caucus Day on March 27th at 3:00 pm ET / 2:00 pm CT to present on “Storytelling and Evangelism”. Pastor Canniff-Kunn is a gifted storyteller and will help us grow in how our own storytelling of our faith connects to God’s story in the world. Following our program attendees will be able to meet with their conference caucus to elected Conference leadership, elected Synod Council representatives for Conferences 6-9, and discuss ministry opportunities together. This meeting will be held on zoom.

A Letter from Your Nomination Committee Chair

In Spring, a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of Love.
         – Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Warmest Greetings! In a Lutheran Spring, our thoughts turn to loving the nominations of those willing to serve as Vice-President, 2 Synod Council Members at Large, or Young Adult Synod Council Person. Right?

Well, maybe it’s just me – I’m the chair of the Nominating Committee. But I know that there are people out there who would like to, and who would benefit from, serving the church in this way. We just need to find them, which is where you come in.

Please take a bit of time and see if you would like to serve or if you have men, women, or youth in your congregation who would be perfect as Vice President, Synod Council members at large, or a Young Adult Synod Council Person.

And, here’s the crux of the matter. Said men, women, or youth may never know of the opportunities to serve if they don’t hear about them. So, I am asking you to share this information with your congregation, and yes, by golly, I’m even asking you to approach people individually and ask them to serve. (Applications are due by May 1, 2022.)

Of course, as usual, there is more information and application links available. Submit nominations here:

Other questions may be directed to me, Nominating Committee Chairperson, Ms. Joan Blanton, integralplanning@att.net or our synod staff liaison, Rev. Jonathan Hemphill, jhemphill@elca-ses.org.

Yours in Christ,

  Joan Blanton, PhD

Resolutions and Memorials for 2022 Synod Assembly

Resolutions and Memorial Deadlines: May 13, 2022 by 5:00 pm

Resolutions and Memorial to be addressed by the 2022 Southeastern Synod Assembly must be submitted to the synod office by 5:00 PM Eastern on May 13, 2022 as determined by the Synod Constitution (S11.01.32.A12).

When submitting a resolution or memorial they must be written in the proper language found in Robert’s Rules of Order. Normally, the “Whereas” clause(s) describe the issue, concern, problem or basis of the resolution and the “Resolved” clause(s) point to proposed solutions and define request action. “Resolved” clauses should clearly define: What should be done? Who should act? What the action may cost and how it is to be funded? When the action should be done? To who the results should be reported?

Resolutions cannot direct the Synod Council or ELCA Church Council to take specific action. A resolution represents a request. Likewise, a memorial of a Synod Assembly cannot direct or demand that the Churchwide Assembly vote in a particular way. A memorial, by definition, is a petition appealing for action.

Resolutions and Memorials may be submitted from congregations, conferences, the Southeastern Synod Lutheran Youth Organization or a group of at least 15 voting members of the assembly and submitted by the deadline.

For more information regarding a resolution or memorial to the ELCA Churchwide Assembly or the ELCA organization or ELCA Council please check out the link here.

To submit a resolution or memorial to be considered at the 2022 Southeastern Synod Assembly please submit using the form that can be found through the link here:

S11.01.32.A12 Resolutions must be submitted to the synod office by 5 pm on the Friday that precedes by three weeks the start of a synod assembly, in order to be considered by that assembly’s Committee on Reference and Counsel. Resolutions submitted after this deadline will not be considered unless the issue is of such an immediate and urgent nature that it clearly cannot be postponed until the next assembly, as determined by either the Committee on Reference and Counsel or the Synod Council.
