Synod Council Nominations

Nominations for Synod Council (to begin serving June 2022) are now closed, but during the first plenary (Friday, June 3, 2022) there will be an opportunity for Floor Nominations to be received. Any Floor Nominee will be required to fill out the Biographical Form by 2:45 pm Eastern in the Assembly Office.

 

2023-2024 Ministry Spending Plan Hearing

Tuesday, May 31, 2022 - 7-8pm ET / 6-7pm CT

The synod's budget & finance committee are holding a hearing on Zoom on the 2023-2024 Ministry Spending Plan, which will then be voted on at the 2022 Synod Assembly.

We share the Gospel best when we share ourselves through small group participation.  

In small groups, we get to know fellow members so much better but, as the groups are being formed, members are encouraged to invite neighbors and friends.

What an AMAZING first Food Truck Friday Night of the season! There was an awesome turn out, delicious food, amazing music, and it was so good to hang out with familiar faces and new faces alike! The music provided by Alicia and Nate of Grassroots Music and some of their youth students was fabulous! A rainbow even adorned the sky above the church!

ELCA Observes 35th Anniversary

The ELCA observed its 35th anniversary on April 30. On this date in 1987, the ELCA constitution was adopted during the opening session of the Constituting Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

The ELCA was formed from a merger of three Lutheran churches—the American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America. To symbolize the formation of the new denomination, the bishops from the three predecessor church bodies poured water from separate containers into one baptismal font.

ELCA "Service and Justice" Updates - Winter/Spring 2022

The Rev. Rafael Malpica Padilla, executive director for ELCA Service and Justice, opened the 2022 spring-summer edition of “Service and Justice Updates” by comparing followers of Jesus to the 3,000-year-old sequoias in Redwood National Park. “Grounded in God’s love,” he says, “we ‘become Christ to one another,’ as Luther wrote, forming an intricate and interconnected ecosystem to support and nourish one another. Like the sequoia we grow tall and strong. Together we grow into the full stature of Christ.”

 

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary launches hybrid Master of Divinity program

Beginning in fall 2022, LTSS M.Div. students will have the opportunity to complete the curriculum in a hybrid format as an alternative to residing on or commuting to campus. It will combine remote learning with face-to-face educational experiences, including the required semesters of supervised field experience and on-campus gatherings twice per year. The hybrid option still offers students opportunities for fellowship and formational events with faculty and residential students.

 

Newberry College - "Our Time to Serve" - Celebrating Spring 2022 Commencement

Relief and jubilation filled the air in Newberry College’s Eleazer Arena on Saturday as members of the class of 2022 turned their tassels toward the future.

The weekend’s commencement exercises celebrated the achievements of 178 graduates from the spring and summer classes. Representatives from 17 states and nine countries crossed the stage.

Commencement Addresses

Each year since 2014, the honor of the spring commencement addresses have been awarded to members of the graduating class, selected by fellow seniors, faculty and staff. The Class of 2022 chose Biasia Roberts, a health care management major from Fort Mill; and Nathaniel Carrasco, a business administration major from Las Vegas.

Closing of a Congregation:

  • Common Table (Lutheran Church of the Messiah) of Decatur, GA, closed in December of 2021
    • The church and property were then deeded to the synod.
    • Because of an existing relationship with and a promise already made, the synod has sold this church to the daycare center.
    • More information will be forthcoming in June.
    • We give thanks for the 90 plus year ministry of this congregation and for the many who were formed in faith.
